There will be many more school-related actions in September, and if you wish to join our volunteers please do write to me at alisonmicklem@hotmail.com and you’ll have the chance to contribute.

Although we’ve got a long way to go, there were some sustainability efforts this past year that promise to bear more fruit in September.

A fresh look at drinking water at school

First, many children, teachers and parents campaigned for less single-use plastic within the school.

At the same time, the Water Team, led by Secondary teacher Paolo Paglia, worked to enable specially filtered and cooled mains water dispensers to be fitted around the school. They recently confirmed that the single-use plastic water bottle dispensers will be removed at the start of the new school year, and high quality cooled water will be available instead. The canteen will have sparkling water available too!

Many thanks to everyone who campaigned on the issue, and big congratulations to the Green School team who are making this huge contribution to bringing about a positive change in our school.

You are my sunshine

The other big issue the students and teachers tackled this year was solar energy, including one of the Green School projects run by the Physics department in collaboration with the JRC. The project enabled around 40 children from all language sections to work together. Anecdotal evidence suggests that interest-levels were high, and further school work on the topic is planned.

The children attended talks and lessons in how to take action towards energy saving and sustainable energy consumption. There were three groups – the first studied energy efficiency in the electrical and thermal management of school systems; the second worked to share this information across school levels, and the third got involved in the costs and benefits of fitting that large array of solar panels which now sit over the Secondary school.

Thinking and acting on sustainability this summer

If these kids are inspiring you to learn more and make a difference, you could start by finding out more about The European Climate Pact, which offers a range of talks this summer. You could also take on a family summer sustainable challenge.

Single-use plastics are a really big problem as you know, so do check in with your town’s commune over the summer to join in with local plastic-gathering initiatives and other sustainable actions during the break.

If you do get involved, feel free to take pictures of all your efforts on behalf of the planet and we’ll be very happy to feature them in an inspirational montage for the new term.

Azione di sostenibilità, quest’anno e quest’estate

A nome del gruppo di sostenibilità dei genitori desideriamo augurare a tutti voi un’estate felice e serena.

Ci saranno molte altre azioni legate alla scuola a settembre e se desiderate unirvi ai nostri volontari scrivetemi a alisonmicklem@hotmail.com e avrete la possibilità di contribuire.

Anche se abbiamo ancora molta strada da fare, quest’anno sono stati fatti alcuni grandi sforzi per la sostenibilità che promettono di dare ulteriori frutti a settembre.

Uno sguardo nuovo sull’acqua potabile a scuola

In primo luogo, molti bambini, insegnanti e genitori hanno fatto una campagna per ridurre la plastica monouso all’interno della scuola.

Allo stesso tempo, il Water Team, guidato dall’insegnante di scuola secondaria Paolo Paglia, ha lavorato per consentire l’installazione, all’interno della scuola, di distributori di acqua di rete appositamente filtrata e raffreddata. Hanno recentemente confermato che i distributori di bottiglie d’acqua di plastica monouso saranno rimossi all’inizio del nuovo anno scolastico e sarà invece disponibile acqua raffreddata di alta qualità. La mensa avrà a disposizione anche acqua frizzante!

Molte grazie a tutti coloro che hanno fatto una campagna sul problema e grandi congratulazioni al team della Green School che sta dando questo enorme contributo per portare un cambiamento positivo nella nostra scuola.

Sei il mio raggio di sole

L’altro grande problema che studenti e insegnanti hanno affrontato quest’anno è stato quello dell’energia solare, incluso uno dei progetti della Green School gestito dal dipartimento di Fisica in collaborazione con il JRC. Il progetto ha permesso a circa 40 bambini di tutte le sezioni linguistiche di lavorare insieme. L’evidenza aneddotica indica che i livelli di interesse sono stati alti ed è previsto un ulteriore lavoro scolastico sull’argomento.

I bambini hanno partecipato a conferenze e lezioni su come agire per il risparmio energetico ed il consumo energetico sostenibile. I gruppi erano tre: il primo ha studiato l’efficienza energetica nella gestione elettrica e termica degli impianti scolastici, il secondo ha lavorato per condividere queste informazioni tra i livelli scolastici e il terzo si è occupato dei costi e dei benefici dell’installazione di quella vasta serie di pannelli solari che ora si trova sulla scuola secondaria.

Pensare e agire sulla sostenibilità quest’estate

Se questi ragazzi vi ispirano a saperne di più e a voler fare la differenza, potreste iniziare scoprendo di più sul Patto europeo per il clima, che quest’estate offre una serie di conferenze. Potreste anche intraprendere una sfida sostenibile in famiglia per l’estate.

La plastica monouso è un problema molto grande, come sapete, quindi controllate il comune della vostra città durante l’estate per partecipare alle iniziative locali di raccolta della plastica e ad altre azioni sostenibili durante questa pausa estiva.

Se vi sentite coinvolti, vi invitiamo a scattare foto di tutti i vostri sforzi a favore del pianeta che saremo molto felici di presentare in un montaggio che sarà di ispirazione per il nuovo trimestre.
