School Values and Wellbeing
At the Parents’ Association of the European School of Varese (AGSEV), we are committed to supporting our school in fostering a welcoming, inclusive, and supportive environment for every student and family.
Our Values
The European Schools were founded after WWII to promote peace and unity by educating children of different nationalities and cultures side by side. Today, we continue to uphold these values by:
* Encouraging respect, empathy, and collaboration
* Celebrating diversity and multiculturalism
* Supporting the holistic development of every child
Golden Rules in Primary
Our Primary School follows the “Golden Rules,” which guide children as they grow and learn:
*Be kind and helpful
*Listen to others
*Be honest
*Work hard and do your best
*Look after property
*Be gentle
Our Values & Policies in Secondary
1. Wellbeing
We recognise that children can only learn if they are feeling safe and well. The Secondary School’s policy on “mental health’ for our children can be found on the ‘Rules and Proceedures’ pages, together with the secondary school’s version of our child protection policy.
2. Kindness
“Children are not born bullies, they are taught to be.” Matt Bomer’.
The school policies and work to combat bullying can be found on the School Psychologist pages of the Primary & Secondary school website.
In Secondary there is a copy of the anti-bullying policy available on the ‘Rules & Proceedures’ pages as well.
3. Health
Our school does not tolerate smoking, vaping or the use of any intoxicating substances on school property, or in the immediate environment.
School and Parents are working hand in hand to addess any problems when they arise, and we follow the legal framework of Italy.
School rules on ‘Substance Abuse’ can be found on the Rules and Procedures pages in Secondary.
4. Anti-Racism
Italy is working hard to recognise structural, institutional and systemic racism within its organisations and schools.
The Manchino law 25, June 1993, n. 205 is a legislative act of the Italian Republic underlining that there is no place for phrases, gestures, actions and slogans aimed at inciting hatred, violence, or discrimination for racial, ethnic, religious or national reasons.
The law also punishes the use of emblems or symbols. Our school supports and upholds all of these anti-racist measures.
5. LGBTQI+
In Secondary some children might identify themselves as part of the LGBQTI+ community.
Psychologists recommend parents are familiar with what this means, so they are better able to help their child navigate this aspect of their lives.
LGBTQI+ stands for: Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer (or questioning), Asexual and plus. Lots of resources are available online, and local groups such as Arcigay Varese can provide local support and information.
Management of Inappropriate Behaviour
Our children are all different, yet united in the spirit of European unity. Sometimes children find difference difficult to understand or accept, and conflict might arise.
There are anti-bullying policies outlined as above, but in some cases the school will activate it’s ‘Managment of Innappropriate Behaviour’ policy, which can be found on the General Rules pages.
