Pedagogical Approach & Learning Support
The European Baccalaureate emphasizes competencies, languages, science, and creativity.
➤ Language learning is central, alongside strong emphasis on science and mathematics.
➤ Learning support is available for students who need extra help, including those with special educational needs. For more information, please contact the school’s learning support coordinator.
➤ A whole-school approach prioritizes positive relationships, emotional wellbeing, and mental health, with workshops and counseling available..
Our school pedagogy rests on competenced-based framework for teaching and learning, informed by Universal DesIgn for Learning (UDL) theory .
More information about the Eight Key Competencies and Green Comp are available on the main European Schools website, together with more information about the European Bacalauriate (EBac).
There are joint Annual and Multiannual pedagogical plans (AP & MAP) for our school system, with each school presenting and discussing their local AP and MAP during the Administration Board meetings.
Throughout the year, AGSEV offers parent training sessions on key topics such as:
➤ Artificial Intelligence and technology use
➤ Child wellbeing and mental health
➤ Positive parenting strategies
Stay informed, share your experiences with other parents, and check our news regularly for upcoming events and workshops!

Parenting Support
Together, we build resilience, flexibility, and a brighter future for all our children.
Digital Education
In Secondary there is an evolving policy around the use of technology called: ‘Bring Your Own Device’ (BYOD) which may include the use of mobiles phones for didactic purposes, as outlined by individual teachers. Further details about that can be found on the Euoprean School’s main page, under pedagogy, Education and ICT.
Educational Choices & Careers Advice in Middle and Secondary
General information about Middle and Secondary is available on the Secondary website, on the main menu under: Pedagogy.
The School has also mapped different pathways for pupils to progress through Middle and Secondary School, and information about the choices to be made, together with subject curricula, can all be found on the Secondary School website under: Orientation. This is also the home of careers guidance and advice.
Made by Dyslexia
All children develop and mature at their own rate, and it’s normal for them to sometimes be ahead or behind in their classes. But if a child is experiencing persistant struggles in the classroom it might be a sign of a learning difference. These differences can impact even the most intellegent children. Early diagnosis and support is essential.
Children and families who experience themselves as ‘different’ are at a greater risk of developing depression and other mental health difficulties. As a first step we would recommend parents familiarize themselves with common differences affecting executive functioning skills, such as dislexia, discalculia, ADHD and Autism. If you think your child could do with some support, talk to your class teacher and see what they recommend.
Pastoral Care at ESV
In Materna and Primary the children have a class teacher – sometimes two – who will stay with them throughout the year. Class teachers change every year. In Middle School and Secondary, the children have class teachers but they do not have a dedicated time to ‘meet’ with them. Pastoral Care is suplimented by the figures of the ‘consilieri’ (… I don’t have any other info or background knowledge of these roles).
MRS McDONALD'S handout on ADHD
School policy on Education Support is available on the main School menu, and follows guidelines from the ES system and from Italy. Our Director of Secondary, Mrs McDonald has created a resource for teachers working with ADHD children, with a particular focus on the impact that RSD (Rejection Sensitivity Disphoria) can have on learning and socialising.
Ask for a Referral
You don’t have to wait for the school to react first if you think there is a problem. Learning differences need home and school to work hand in hand. You could ask for a referal from your ‘Medico di Base’ for a test by a specialist.
If you need more information quickly AGSEV are compiling a list of private diagnostic centres which is available on request. There is an ESV parents support group on Facebook called: ‘Parents’ group for SEN kids @ EURSC Varese’ which is a great place to reach out and say hello, and find other families to talk to.
Not every child with problems will eventually recieve a diagnosis, but every parent needs and deserves support: this is what our community is for!
