This school year Rita Pennese Schumacher, the long-serving AGSEV German section rep, AGSEV Secretary, and tireless organizer of many initiatives, stepped down from her official duties in AGSEV. We’re sad to see her go, and wanted to catch up with her briefly and ask her to share her experiences over the last decade of dedication to the school.

Why did you first join AGEV? How many years have you been an active member?

With 4 children, I first signed up for AGSEV as we arrived in Italy, for the 2008-2009 school year, and I paid my membership dues again this year – that makes more than 10 years!

How would you describe AGSEV in a nutshell?

AGSEV is the families’ voice inside the school, as they’re in constant dialogue with the administration and have an official vote in all the meetings they participate in. They also organize lots of useful activities and events that benefit the entire school community.

You were the AGSEV Secretary, you organized extracurricular activities, created the magazine every year, the calendar, handled AGSEV membership, worked in the office at the JRC… am I forgetting anything?

Actually, there is more! I was the AGSEV representative for the German section for many years, I organized the BAC party, the Pupils’ Exchange, the university fairs, and even more 🙂

Wow! Of all these things you managed, which was your favorite? Why?

I’ve always given a lot to everything I’ve done, so it’s difficult to say, but maybe my favorite experience has been the artistic Calendar with drawings from pupils in Primary and Secondary. Every year I’ve tried in this small way to send a message, and seeing the enthusiasm and talent of the kids is really such a joy. It will be a great memory!

How have parents – or kids – changed since you started?

The times change fast, and people change with them. Being a “European family” is a big challenge, but it’s also our school’s strong point, this intense dialogue between different languages and mentalities and the discovery of new points of views.

What do you think it takes to do your job(s) well?

Every job you do with love and a reasonable amount of empathy is a job well done.

What’s the best reason to become a member of AGSEV?

Beyond simply making a concrete financial contribution with membership fees, without a doubt it’s the fact that you feel like you’re an active part in the school community. It’s a thread that connects us all for the good and wellbeing of our kids.

What will you remember most about AGSEV?

I’ve got loads of memories, but one thing I’ll always remember is a conference on the very sensitive issue of drugs that I organized with the Fondazione del Pesciolino Rosso. The experience was surprising and incredible, especially because the feeling I had went I went to school for one thing or another and the kids greeted me with so much affection.

Quest’anno scolastico Rita Pennese Schumacher, da molti anni rappresentante della sezione tedesca di AGSEV, segretaria di AGSEV ed instancabile organizzatrice di numerose iniziative, si è dimessa dalle sue funzioni ufficiali in AGSEV. Ci rattrista vederla lasciare questi ruoli e abbiamo voluto raggiungerla per chiederle di condividere brevemente le sue esperienze di quest’ultimo decennio in cui si è dedicata alla scuola.

Perché ti sei iscritta ad AGSEV? Per quanti anni sei stata membro attivo?

Avendo 4 figli, mi sono iscritta all’Agsev quasi subito dopo l’arrivo in Italia, nell’anno scolastico 2008/2009, e anche quest’anno sono iscritta naturalmente, sono quindi socio da più di 10 anni…

Come descriveresti AGSEV in poche parole?

L’Agsev è la voce delle famiglie all’interno della scuola essendo in costante dialogo con la Direzione e partecipando alle riunioni ufficiali con facoltà di voto; inoltre organizza molteplici ed utili attività ed eventi a favore dell’intera comunità scolastica.

Tu sei stata la segretaria dell’AGSEV, hai organizzato attività extracurriculari, hai creato ogni anno la rivista, il calendario, hai gestito l’adesione all’AGSEV, hai lavorato in ufficio al CCR… sto dimenticando qualcosa?

Eh sì, sono stata per anni la rappresentante della Sezione tedesca, organizzato Feste BAC, ho curato i ragazzi del Pupils’ Exchange, organizzato le Fiere universitarie, e alcune altre cose ancora…?

Wow! Tra tutte queste attività di cui ti sei occupata, quale è stata la tua preferita? E perché?

Ho fatto sempre tutto con convinzione e tanta passione, è difficile scegliere, ma forse i più bei ricordi sono legati al Calendario artistico con i disegni dei ragazzi sia della Primaria che della Secondaria: ogni anno ho cercato nel mio piccolo di dare un messaggio e vedere l’entusiasmo dei ragazzi e soprattutto il loro talento è sempre stata una grande emozione, sarà un bellissimo ricordo!

Come sono cambiati i genitori – o i figli – da quando hai iniziato?

I tempi cambiano rapidamente, e con loro cambiano le persone. Essere “European Family” è una grande sfida, ma proprio questo è il punto di forza della nostra Scuola, il dialogo intenso tra lingue e mentalità diverse e la scoperta di punti di vista sempre nuovi.

Cosa pensi che ci voglia per fare bene il tuo lavoro (o i tuoi lavori) in AGSEV?

Tutto ciò che si fa con amore e ragionevole empatia è fatto bene.

Qual è la più importante motivazione per diventare un membro dell’AGSEV?

Oltre al principio e al fatto di contribuire alle attività in modo pratico e finanziario con i fondi delle quote sociali, senz’altro sentirsi parte attiva della comunità scolastica, è un filo che ci lega tutti per il bene e il benessere dei nostri figli.

Cosa ricorderai di più di AGSEV?

I ricordi sono tanti, una conferenza sul tema molto delicato della droga che ho organizzato con la Fondazione del PesciolinoRosso è stata un’esperienza sorprendente ed incredibile … senz’altro però al primo posto c’ è la sensazione che provavo quando andavo a scuola per qualche impegno e i ragazzi mi salutavano con tanto affetto…
