Music in the Primary School

Music in the Primary School By Jill Bloomfield

Boo-di.. Doo-bi..La-la.. (It) Benvenuti tutti quanti Benvenuti ai nostri canti Benvenuti tutti insieme qui da noi Benvenuti à tutti, à tutti voi La-la…

Music begins on the first day of term in the primary school when the new first year students are welcomed by the fifth years with a song with a verse in each of the language sections.

Each class has an obligatory number of minutes for music which may be taught by the class teacher or a specialist. The children will sing and play percussion but progress on to tuned instruments when ready, either Orff instruments, recorder or perhaps study an instrument with one of the instrumental teachers . Please see the AGSEV list in this booklet for teachers and their instruments. Some students are encouraged by their teachers to complete musical examinations through ABRSM, please see separate page for that also. However during the second week of term all of the instrumental teachers present themselves and their instruments to the primary school children in the Aula Magna with their class teachers. Throughout the school year the class teachers in their levels may opt for a music workshop by a visiting specialist to create a workshop experience, such as a voice or dance workshop which may spread over 2-3 lessons. Last year a professional orchestra came and performed for the primary students and throughout the year we invite youth choirs to come and perform to us from different countries. There are also excursions to concerts in Milan, or closer, organised by the class teachers. To sum up, all children get the chance to experience at least 2-3 performances and
participate in at least one workshop as well as their weekly lessons in class.

During European Hours on Monday afternoons specialist teachers run an orchestra and choir throughout the year, as well as other musical activities such as instrument making and so on.
