[Per l’italiano vedi sotto] European School Director Ariane Farinelle has always mentioned the importance of the parents association’s active role in representing school parents to the administration. Recently we reached out to her by email to find out more about her vision of what AGSEV can do.

How do you see the role of the parents association in your administration?

The parents association is an indispensable part of the life of a school. The school can’t exist without a parents association to represent and work for the good of all families and the school of these families.

The parents association itself is made up of people who represent parents and families, who are present during debates to present, defend and explain the different demands of parents.

The thing about families, though, is that every family has its particular needs, and would like the school to function according to its own model. But the school must adopt a model that suits the whole community. It’s a question of working together to find the right model so that we can all function according to the objectives that we pursue, the realities on the ground, the possibilities and the current regulations.

Our exchanges must be positive, constructive, well-founded, and conducted with benevolence and respect for the good of the entire community. The parents association is also a spokesperson, a link and a facilitator for all families and for the school.

How would you describe your day to day relationship with the parents association?

The school’s relationship with the parents association is an ongoing one. There is indeed a framework of meetings planned by the school, but in addition to this, there are all the contacts we have with each other according to the needs of the parents association or the needs of the school.

We consult the parents association for all important decisions in the school. It’s the intermediary for the school to explain the reasons for certain decisions. In the role of the Head of a global school, it’s very important to have the whole school’s vision and to make the right decisions for the whole community. One decision may have collateral effects on others. It’s essential to focus on the overall vision and the continuous development of our students.

In the European Schools, it’s important to take into account all the other European Schools as well. We belong to a large family which has determined and continues to determine its framework. And we have to follow this framework, meaning we have to constantly adapt.

Is the parents association’s role always collaborative, or sometimes conflictual?

As I said before, the parents association is an integral part of the life of the school. We’re complementary, we have to work together. We must seek to do our utmost for each of the students entrusted to us. That said, our difficulty always lies in the fact that we have to meet the needs of individuals within a community. At the micro level, it’s very important for the school to know its students, to follow them and to offer each one the best according to their individual needs. The parents association is a great resource in this regard. It also helps the school to empathize with the families, and to warn us of difficulties that may not be directly perceptible by the school.

What are some concrete ways the parents association has inspired you to take a specific course of action?

Last year, we offered students a wonderful BAC ceremony at the Varese stadium, despite the difficult health and safety requirements, thanks to the proposal from the parents association. The parents association helps the school a lot in its job of representation, whether it’s during open days, the mostre d’arte, at the Christmas market, contacts with the JRC, and more.

How much do you weigh the contributions of the parents association in relation to other stakeholders when making decisions?

The school’s various stakeholders are represented on the school board. Each of these groups is participatory, consultative and active. They each have an equal share in expressing and debating their ideas. Our board includes: school management, the Secretary or Vice Secretary of the Central Office, the Head of Finance of the Central Office, the European Commission, the President and Vice President of AGSEV, teacher representatives, student representatives, and a representative from the JRC. The proposals of each group are listened to and respected. The parents association always contributes, and we always give consideration to their contribution. Then, we have to consider all these different positions and ideas in light of European School values and goals, and consider what’s possible and permitted according to current legislation.

How has the situation changed with Covid?

Covid has created an extremely particular management situation. We must take into account a significant number of contingencies when making any decision. And we must adhere to the different legislative frameworks imposed.

What do you see for our relationship in the future?

For the future, the school wishes to continue with an active, constructive and proactive collaboration from the parents association.

La direttrice della Scuola Europea Ariane Farinelle ha sempre menzionato l’importanza del ruolo attivo dell’associazione dei genitori nel rappresentare i genitori della scuola presso l’amministrazione. Recentemente l’ho contattata via e-mail per saperne di più sulla sua opinione su ciò che può fare AGSEV.

Come vede il ruolo dell’associazione dei genitori nella sua amministrazione?

L’associazione dei genitori è una parte indispensabile della vita di una scuola. La scuola non può esistere senza un’associazione di genitori che rappresenti tutte le famiglie e lavori per il loro bene e per la loro scuola.

L’associazione dei genitori è essa stessa composta da persone che rappresentano i genitori e le famiglie e sono presenti durante i dibattiti per presentare, difendere e spiegare le diverse esigenze dei genitori.

L’unico limite è che ogni famiglia ha le sue particolari esigenze e vorrebbe che la scuola funzionasse secondo il proprio modello. Ma la scuola deve adottare un modello che si adatti a tutta la comunità. Si tratta di lavorare insieme per trovare il giusto modello, in modo da poter far funzionare tutto secondo gli obiettivi che perseguiamo, le realtà sul territorio, le possibilità e le normative vigenti.

I nostri scambi devono essere positivi, costruttivi, fondati e condotti con benevolenza e rispetto per il bene dell’intera comunità. L’associazione dei genitori è anche portavoce, collegamento e facilitatore per tutte le famiglie e per la scuola.

Come descriverebbe il suo rapporto quotidiano con l’associazione dei genitori?

Il rapporto della scuola con l’associazione dei genitori è continuo. C’è infatti un quadro di incontri pianificati dalla scuola ma, oltre a questo, ci sono tutti i contatti che abbiamo tra di noi a seconda delle esigenze dell’associazione dei genitori o delle necessità della scuola.

Ci consultiamo con l’associazione dei genitori per tutte le decisioni importanti della scuola. È l’intermediario tra scuola e famiglie per spiegare le ragioni di alcune decisioni. Nel ruolo di Direttore di una scuola globale, è molto importante avere la visione complessiva della scuola e prendere le giuste decisioni per l’intera comunità. Una decisione può avere effetti collaterali su altre. È essenziale concentrarsi sulla visione globale e sul continuo sviluppo dei nostri studenti.

Nelle scuole europee è importante tenere conto anche di tutte le altre scuole europee. Apparteniamo ad una grande famiglia che ha determinato e continua a determinare il suo quadro di riferimento. E dobbiamo seguire questo quadro, il che significa che dobbiamo costantemente adattarci.

Il ruolo dell’associazione dei genitori è sempre collaborativo o talvolta conflittuale?

Come ho detto prima, l’associazione dei genitori è parte integrante della vita della scuola. Siamo complementari, dobbiamo lavorare insieme. Dobbiamo cercare di fare del nostro meglio per ciascuno degli studenti che ci viene affidato. Detto questo, la nostra difficoltà sta sempre nel fatto che dobbiamo soddisfare le esigenze dei singoli all’interno di una comunità. A livello micro, è molto importante che la scuola conosca i propri studenti, li segua e offra a ciascuno il meglio in base alle proprie esigenze individuali. L’associazione dei genitori è una grande risorsa in questo senso. Aiuta anche la scuola ad entrare in empatia con le famiglie e ad avvertirci di difficoltà che potrebbero non essere direttamente percepibili dalla scuola.

Quali sono i modi concreti con cui l’associazione dei genitori vi ha ispirato a intraprendere un’azione specifica?

L’anno scorso abbiamo offerto agli studenti una splendida cerimonia di BAC allo stadio di Varese, nonostante i difficili requisiti di salute e sicurezza, proprio grazie alla proposta dell’associazione dei genitori. L’associazione dei genitori aiuta molto la scuola nel proprio lavoro di rappresentanza, anche durante le giornate di open day, le mostre d’arte, il mercatino di Natale, i contatti con il CCR e molto altro.

Quanto pesa il contributo dell’associazione dei genitori in relazione alle altre parti interessate nel prendere decisioni?

Le varie parti interessate della scuola sono rappresentate nel consiglio di amministrazione della scuola. Ognuno di questi gruppi è partecipativo, consultivo e attivo. Ognuno di loro ha una parte uguale nell’esprimere e discutere le proprie idee. Il nostro consiglio di amministrazione comprende: la direzione della scuola, il segretario o il vice segretario dell’ufficio centrale, il capo delle finanze dell’ufficio centrale, la commissione europea, il presidente e il vice presidente dell’AGSEV, i rappresentanti degli insegnanti, i rappresentanti degli studenti e un rappresentante del CCR. Le proposte di ciascun gruppo sono ascoltate e rispettate. L’associazione dei genitori contribuisce sempre e noi teniamo sempre in considerazione il loro contributo. Dobbiamo quindi considerare tutte queste diverse posizioni e idee alla luce dei valori e degli obiettivi della scuola europea e considerare ciò che è possibile e consentito dalla legislazione vigente.

Come è cambiata la situazione con l’emergenza Covid?

Covid ha creato una situazione gestionale estremamente particolare. Dobbiamo tenere conto di un numero significativo di contingenze quando prendiamo una decisione. E dobbiamo rispettare i diversi quadri legislativi imposti.

Cosa vede per il nostro rapporto in futuro?

Per il futuro la scuola desidera continuare con una collaborazione attiva, costruttiva e proattiva da parte dell’associazione dei genitori.
